Agua para Beber, a non-profit organization, is a community based program in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico for improving water quality and promoting safe hygiene practices in low-income border communities. The project addressed local environmental health problems – drinking water – that directly affect children's health. In addition, this project trained and assisted local community groups in developing their capacity to assess and address their own environmental health problems. The program combined a hygiene education and water purification program with the distribution of low-cost, drinking water receptacles and used the services of community health promoters for its implementation. The goal of the program was to offer an intermediate solution to help improve the safety of drinking water, and thus, the quality of life for border residents. The project leads University of Texas at El Paso and Aqua 21, A.C. partnered with the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, to train local community based organizations and implemented the program in three communities located in the fringe areas of Cd. Juárez, improving the lives of more families in need.
