Building Community on the Border: Disseminating Information about Alternative Construction and Sanitary Facilities

INSTITUTIONS: New Mexico State University and Centro de Mujeres Tonantzin, A.C.

The Women's Intercultural Center of Anthony, New Mexico, el Centro de Mujeres Tonantzin of Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua, and the Center for Intensive Training in English of New Mexico State University (CITE), educated and trained women in the border community about the use of recycled tires in construction and the production of sanitary waterless toilets. The Women's Intercultural Center prepared the draft of a book on their building methods. El Centro de Mujeres Tonantzin prepared to build more toilets and train recipient families in their proper use. CITE coordinated the project and disseminated the construction information which was presented in English through editing workshops and presentation practices.
