This binacional collaborative project designed and implemented an educational and community development program in Nogales, Sonora to raise environmental awareness; reduce pollution; and minimize health risks to residents of marginalized areas. Through the development of a community-based training program, the participating institutions worked closely with community residents and stakeholders in Nogales, Sonora, including the Maquiladora Association, the municipal government, the Comisión Sonora-Arizona, and non-profit community organizations, to promote ways of minimizing health risks by altering behaviors that contribute to environmental degradation. The project provided service learning opportunities for students from the Instituto Tecnológico de Nogales, Arizona State University and student members of Fundación México. The program also developed environmental education curriculum for the primary schools in Nogales, Sonora and invited students from Instituto Tecnológico de Nogales to form part of a volunteer corps to assist in the organization and coordination of the educational campaign in the communities.
