Targeting Drinking Water in Border Colonias: A Solar Still Development

AMOUNT: $9,760 US

PROJECT LEADERS: Robert Foster , Sharon Eby-Martin

INSTITUTIONS: New Mexico State University, El Paso Solar Energy Association (EPSEA) and Grupo de Trabajo de Energía Renovable de Chihuahua

The project demonstrated the feasibility of using solar energy to purify contaminated water for family residences in border colonias of Cd. Juárez. The solar stills project promoted environmental protection by incorporation of clean solar energy technology to meet its energy needs. The project also addressed economic development because the project eliminated contaminated water from community member households, thus increasing their health and overall economic productivity. The project addressed community members to obtain safe drinking water in their local communities, as well as the well being of the region as a whole.
