A Collaborative Speech and Language Intervention Program
for Mexican Children with Special Needs

The purpose of this program was to understand the cultural implications of American speech and language treatment techniques on Mexican Children. The project conducted an in-service training with 50 Mexican special educators and 20 specialists from New Mexico and Texas who worked with children with special needs in Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Teachers, as to their cultural appropriateness, evaluated these in-services for Mexican children. Eight presentations were provided by bilingual speech language pathologists from Las Cruces, NM and presented information concerning speech and language development, disorders, and its remediation. The project’s potential impact reach was of 1500 classroom children.
