The WaterShed/La Cuenca del Río Program

A binational, interdisciplinary pilot project targeted to sixth, seventh and eighth graders of Laredo, TX and Nuevo Laredo, Tamps. The WaterShed curriculum was translated into Spanish and placed special emphasis on the interdisciplinary aspects of healthy environments and healthy communities, including economic development and community health education issues. The curriculum containd eight lessons for each grade level, at the conclusion of the lessons, the children traveled to the Laredo Community College for a day-long field trip to the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center. They received instruction from local professionals on important issues such as economic development and its impact on the environment, environmental toxicology and risk assessment, and the impact of water quality on health.
