Description:

The 2021 AIEA Leadership Academy for New Senior International Officers is an intimate, selective, and intensive Academy with deep learning on issues relating to leading internationalization. Participants build a strong network of peers and develop action plans addressing challenges and opportunities in internationalizing their institutions.

Program Acceptance
The program will accept a limited number of Senior International Officers (SIOs) at higher education institutions with less than 5 years in their current leadership position. Each participant will be asked to identify a specific challenge or topic of particular interest to them as SIOs, and to write a brief 1-page essay (max 300 words) about this as part of the application process. Applicants will be accepted through the March 1 application deadline. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application within 30 days following the submission of their applications.

Applicants are encouraged to apply early, as this is a competitive process with limited space!

Location
The participants will be housed together at the Rizzo Center, a sophisticated meeting and conference center in Chapel Hill, NC, minutes from the main campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.

Faculty
The faculty members for the Academy are all experienced SIOs and will be present for all Academy sessions. The 2020 Academy faculty include Dr. Pia Wood (University of North Texas; past AIEA president), Dr. Penelope Pynes (University of North Carolina, Greensboro; past AIEA president), Dr. David Di Maria (University of Maryland Baltimore County) and Dr. Harvey Charles (University at Albany, State University of New York; past AIEA president). Additional speakers will include Dr. Darla K. Deardorff (AIEA).

Academy Program Content
The Academy will cover eleven thematic topics that are relevant for leaders in international higher education:

  • The Role of the Senior International Officer
  • International Student Recruitment and Enrollment Management
  • Internationalization of the Curriculum
  • Relating to the Administration
  • Building Alliances
  • Developing International Strategic Partnerships
  • Making the Case for Internationalization
  • Assessment: What SIOs Need to Know
  • Exploring Resources
  • Strategic Planning
  • Career Trajectories for SIOs

Each faculty member will chair topical sessions, and all will contribute to each topic. There will also be three sessions set aside for presentations and small group discussions among the participants to apply the knowledge to their own institutional contexts. Through the Academy, participants will gain valuable knowledge and insights into how to lead comprehensive internationalization at their institutions. Upon successful completion of the Academy, participants will receive a certificate of completion issued by the Association of International Education Administrators.

Academy Schedule
Participants are requested to arrive on Monday afternoon, May 4 in time for an opening dinner at the Rizzo Center (Hyatt) on Monday evening. The following Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will feature two working sessions each morning and two sessions each afternoon. Breakfasts and lunches are provided. No group dinners are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be a closing academy dinner on Thursday night at a leading restaurant in Chapel Hill. Friday morning will feature a session for presentations by participants and the awarding of certificates of completion, after which participants will be free to depart (no sooner than 12 noon).
