education has become an important alternative means of
learning for many college and university students. The
development of the Inter American University of Puerto
Rico's distance education offerings is based on the use
of the latest Internet and videoconference technologies
to provide asynchronous education that meets the needs
of today’s students. Participants will have the opportunity
to interact with campus faculty as well as the Deans of
the Graduate and Professional Schools. |

Seminars
will include a working session, lecture on International
Education with highlights of Puerto Rico’s history and
culture; guided tours hosted by the San Germán and Ponce
Campuses of Inter American University of Puerto Rico.
The San Germán Campus, with a long history of excellent
academic service to the Puerto Rican community and the
rest of the Caribbean, is also known as the University
Paradise of Puerto Rico for its lovely grounds and spectacular
and cozy environment. Located on the outskirts of the
second oldest town on the island and recognized in 2004
by the United Nations for preserving its colonial heritage,
the campus was founded in 1912 as the Polytechnic Institute.
Participants will visit the city’s main historical sites,
including the second oldest church-museum in the Western
Hemisphere, Porta Coeli. The tour will culminate with
lunch at the president’s official residence; “Casa María”
built in the 1930’s, which provides a breathtaking panoramic
view of the valley. The Ponce campus is located in the
second largest city on the island, and is well known for
its up-to-date technology providing services to academics,
students and administrators and used to develop innovative
projects in distance learning. In the afternoon, the group
will visit the historical district and to the Serrallés
Castle Museum, a magnificent example of revival architecture
popular in the 1920’s. |

Through
an application of the International Union of Pure and
Applied Chemistry and the UNESCO India project, University
scientists developed a model for the construction of low-cost
scientific equipment. As a collaborative project in the
area of knowledge and technology transfer, this model
has been presented in various Latin-American countries
to increase the research capabilities of students in the
region. |

local artisans against a backdrop of folkloric music and

Dinner, San Cristóbal Fort, Old San Juan
The
Conference’s final event will be held at San Cristóbal
Fort, located at Old San Juan. It is the largest military
fortification in the Americas and it was used to protect
the city from land attacks. It was El Morro’s partner
in defending San Juan. Its oldest section was built
in 1634, and it was last redesigned in 1783. It has
been a US National Park since 1949 and World Heritage
Site since 1983. The University Metropolitan campus’
Big Band will perform international tunes during the
event. Puerto Rico Bomba and Plena music will set the
festive atmosphere as well. The event will include a
buffet dinner. (Admission for significant others with
a meal ticket only) |

workshop is designed to assist participants in thinking
more intentionally about internationalization. After an
overview of the American Council on Education's model
for advancing campus internationalization, participants
will engage in articulating student international learning
goals. Participants will also learn about how to conduct
an institutional review of international activities with
the goal of developing an internationalization plan that
emphasizes the integration of existing international work. |

presenter will briefly draw the organizational and programmatic
framework required to internationalize the curriculum
at an institution. The group will debate the challenges
and benefits of international curricular reform. The presenter
will then have the group examine several examples of international
curricula in detail. Finally, the group will discuss the
benefits that students derive from an international education,
and its role in enhancing the cognitive skills students
must acquire to achieve global competency. |

tour provides an in-depth understanding of the history,
culture and beauty of this fascinating old town. Visit
Fort San Cristobal with a knowledgeable and experienced
tour guide. The guided walking tour includes information
on battles and attacks, heroic deaths and other interesting

Plaza de Armas and a leisurely stroll up to Plaza Quincentenaria
- the Plaza of the Quincentennial, a celebration of the
discovery of Puerto Rico a little over 500 years ago.

See
modern San Juan as you drive in air-conditioned comfort
through areas of Isla Verde and Condado, then past Fort
San Gerónimo and on into Old San Juan, one of the most
beautiful old cities in the New World, and a filming location
for big-budget movies starring such celebrities as Steven
Seagal, Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone. Your first
stop is a short visit to Fort San Cristobal, a mainstay
of the San Juan fortification system, from which the Spanish
successfully defended their city from British and Dutch
attacks as well as frequent assaults from various and
sundry pirates. (Be sure to watch their historical video
on the area). You'll see beautiful 17th century Spanish
ironwork on restored homes and note the blue-black glazed
cobblestones that were brought to San Juan as ballast
from the Spanish galleons and used to line the narrow
streets of the Old City. In addition, armed with a customized
map of Old San Juan, you will have time to explore some
of the many interesting shops, boutiques and art galleries
that have made this historic area their home. |

El
Yunque Rainforest consists of a range of mountains located
approximately 50 minutes from the hotel. This area receives
billions of gallons of rainfall each year and has over
240 varieties of plants and trees. El Yunque boasts a
jungle-like atmosphere consisting of giant hardwoods,
tropical ferns over 40 feet tall, bamboo groves and orchids.
Stops are made at La Coca Falls (a great photo opportunity),
El Portal Visitor's Center and at the Yokahu tower for
great views of the eastern coastline of the island. You
will also make a photo stop at beautiful Luquillo Beach. |
