DEADLINE: Monday May 16, 2005 (extended)

Stakeholders in North American higher education collaboration are invited to submit presentation proposals for CONAHEC’s Tenth North American Higher Education Conference. CONAHEC’s conference, “Beyond Boundaries: Building Bridges of Collaboration in Higher Education” will take place from October 12-15 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

CONAHEC is now accepting presentation proposals for the conference. Suggested topics include:

  • Mechanisms to promote quality assurance and mutual recognition of courses and degrees
  • Current challenges and opportunities in North American higher education
  • Best practices in efforts to internationalize institutions and curricula
  • Comparative studies of the development, implementation and promotion of student exchange programs in other regions
  • Mechanisms to promote the certification of skills in professional and technical fields
  • Ways to encourage more active participation by institutions, governments and the business sector in international education and collaboration
  • Promoting and strengthening North American studies across the continent and beyond
  • Student and faculty mobility
  • Professional mobility and market needs
  • Higher education and economic development
  • Providing international experiences for those unable to leave their home country

Preference will be given to topics that address the “Priorities for North American Higher Education Collaboration Recommendations” produced at CONAHEC’s 2002 Calgary conference.

New at this conference!

Some papers presented at the CONAHEC conference will be published in special issues of the peer-reviewed journals Homines: Revista de ciencias sociales and Scholar and Educator: The Journal of the Society of Educators and Scholars produced by the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico. Papers selected for publication will be chosen at the sole discretion of the journal editors.

Concurrent sessions will feature 20-minute presentations. Case studies and original research will be considered. Proposals that explore the above topics in the North American context will be of greatest use to conference attendees. Diverse perspectives from all sectors, not just higher education, are welcome. We encourage contributions from business, government, non-profit, primary and secondary education. In addition, we invite the sharing of innovative frameworks not traditionally addressed by higher education administrative and international education communities.

Proposals must include:

  • A brief abstract of 100-200 words summarizing how you plan to address the topic.
  • A brief biographical summary that illustrates your expertise in the area you propose to address.
  • Your complete contact information.

Please note that abstracts, proposals, and biographical information can be submitted in English, French or Spanish, and translations into the other two languages would be very helpful. For consideration, submit your proposal via email file attachment in Word or PDF format to Martín Velazquez at mvelazqz@email.arizona.edu by Monday May 16, 2005 (deadline extended).

LANGUAGES: Presentations can be made in English, Spanish or French. However, due to the high cost involved, only a small number of presentations will benefit from simultaneous interpretation services, and we cannot guarantee prior to the conference, that any one particular session will the interpreted.

NOTIFICATION: Those who submit proposals before the deadline will be notified by Monday, May 23, 2005, regarding the decision about their proposal.

COMPENSATION: Regretfully, presenters will not receive any compensation. Travel, lodging and conference registration fees will be the presenter's responsibility.

PAPER POSTING DEADLINES: If your proposal is accepted and you would like to post a paper on CONAHEC's Web site prior to the event, it must be submitted to CONAHEC by Monday, September 5, 2005. CONAHEC will not be able to provide photocopies of the papers at the event for distribution, however, papers will be made available in their original language(s) on the CONAHEC website. Any translations (if desired) are the responsibility of, and at the cost of, the presenter.
