Networking Excursions


Meet new counterparts and colleagues as you discover Puerto Rico and its surrounding areas!

CONAHEC and the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico have arranged for 5 optional networking excursions and tours on Saturday, October 15th, 2005. The price of the tour includes transportation and a tour guide; participants are responsible for their own lunches. We strongly encourage you to take full advantage of this informal meeting format to connect with new partners for your institutional projects! To participate in these activities, you must register online, in advance.

  • SATURDAY WORKSHOP ON INTERNATIONALIZING YOUR INSTITUTION

    Location:
    Caribe Hilton
    Duration: Three hours
    Cost: $75

    This interactive workshop will focus on developing an institutional strategy for internationalization. Participants will discuss the major rationales for internationalization at their institutions, factors contributing to or impeding the process, such as the external environment, leadership and faculty support, student interest, policies and practices. Speaker will describe a process for conducting an "internationalization review" as a component of strategy development.

  • SATURDAY WORKSHOP ON INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE CURRICULUM

    Location: Caribe Hilton
    Duration: Three hours
    Cost: $75

    The presenter will briefly draw the organizational and programmatic framework required to internationalize the curriculum at an institution. The group will then debate the challenges and benefits of international curricular reform. The presenter will then have the group examine several examples of international curricula in detail. Finally, the group will discuss the benefits that students derive from an international education, and its role in enhancing the cognitive skills that students must acquire to achieve global competency.

  • SATURDAY NETWORKING TOUR TO OLD SAN JUAN

    Duration:
    Approximately four hours
    Costs: $47

    This tour will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the history, culture and beauty of this fantastic old town. You will first visit Fort San Cristobal with a knowledgeable and experienced tour guide. A guided walking tour will include information on attacks, deaths and interesting stories. Your tour will include a visit to the Plaza de Armas, a leisurely stroll up to Plaza Quincentenaria - the Plaza of the Quincentennial, a celebration of the discovery of Puerto Rico a little over 500 years ago. Your guide will wind his way through history, getting just far enough off the beaten track to help you make some fascinating finds that elude the ninety percent of visitors who never step off the main streets. After this captivating tour, you will be provided with time on your own to explore and shop if you wish. There are plenty of galleries and museums found along the cobblestone streets of the Old City which will surely keep you entertained. Your guide will be nearby to answer any questions and assist in finding special hidden places that are a true treasure. There is a minimum of 18 guests for this excursion.
  • SATURDAY NETWORKING CITY BUS TOUR OF OLD AND NEW SAN JUAN WITH SHOPPING TIME

    See modern San Juan as you drive in air-conditioned comfort through areas of Isla Verde and Condado, then past Fort San Gerónimo and on into Old San Juan, one of the most beautiful old cities in the New World, and a filming location for big-budget movies starring such celebrities as Steven Seagal, Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone. Your first stop is a short visit to Fort San Cristobal, a mainstay of the San Juan fortification system, from which the Spanish successfully defended their city from British and Dutch attacks as well as frequent assaults from various and sundry pirates. (Be sure to watch their historical video on the area). You'll see the beautiful 17th century Spanish ironwork on the restored homes and note the blue-black glazed cobblestones that were brought to San Juan as ballast from the Spanish galleons, and were used to line the narrow streets of the Old City. In addition, armed with our customized map of Old San Juan, you will have time to explore some of the many interesting shops, boutiques and art galleries that have made this historic area their home.

  • SATURDAY NETWORKING BUS TOUR TO EL YUNQUE RAIN FOREST WITH VISIT TO LUQUILLO BEACH

    Duration: Approximately four hours
    Cost: $34

    El Yunque Rainforest consists of a range of mountains, located approximately 50 minutes from the hotel. This area receives billions of gallons of rainfall each year and has over 240 varieties of plants and trees. El Yunque boasts a jungle-like atmosphere consisting of giant hardwoods, tropical ferns over 40 feet tall, bamboo groves and orchids. Stops are made at La Coca Falls (a great photo opportunity), El Portal Visitor's Center and at the Yokahu tower for great views of the eastern coastline of the island. You will also make a photo stop at beautiful Luquillo Beach.
