Robert Pastor became vice president of international affairs and professor of international relations at American University in September 2002. He established and directs a new Center for North American Studies that will teach students about Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. and undertakes research on ways to facilitate integration and improve relations among the three countries and peoples. His past positions include professor of political science at Emory University, as well as fellow and founding director of the Carter Center's Latin American and Caribbean Program and the Democracy and China Election Projects. Pastor holds a doctorate from Harvard University and is the author or editor of 14 books, including Toward a North American Community: Lessons from the Old World for the New and, with Jorge G. Castañeda, Limits to Friendship: The United States and Mexico. Pastor was the director of Latin American affairs on the National Security Council from 1977-81 and was the senior advisor to the Carter-Nunn-Powell mission to Haiti.

Robert Pastor fue designado en septiembre del 2002 como vicerrector de asuntos internacionales y profesor de relaciones internacionales en American University. En esta misma institución ha establecido y dirige el nuevo Centro de Estudios de América del Norte el cual realizará actividades de docencia e investigación. Como investigador ha enfocado sus esfuerzos en las formas de facilitar la integración y mejorar las relaciones entre los países de la región del TLCAN, sus gobiernos y sus ciudadanos. Anteriormente fue profesor de ciencias políticas en la Universidad Emory, así como académico y director fundador del Programa de América Latina y el Caribe en el Centro Carter, así como el Proyecto de Elecciones y Democracia en China.
