This publication examines the responses given by 144 research universities to a 2001 institutional survey conducted by ACE and expands on the findings presented in the 2003 ACE report titled Mapping Internationalization on U.S. Campuses. It reports a medium-high level of overall internationalization for research universities, with 57 percent scoring "medium-high" or four on a five-point scale and 34 percent scoring "medium" or three. It also provides scores for each dimension of the internationalization index, compares the top two quartiles of research universities ("highly active") with the bottom three, and outlines activities that are more exclusive to highly active universities.
