Puebla - Caught Between Antiquity and Modernity

TransportationHotel InformationPuebla Attractions

Puebla is a UNESCO World heritage Site. Within its historic center there are approximately 5, 000 colonial buildings, most of them built in the 16th century. The beautiful baroque architecture of this city can be seen in its Cathedral - a treasure of colonial art.

This culturally rich city boasts a diverse collection of unique museums, including the Museum of Religious Colonial Art, the Regional Museum of Anthropology and History of Puebla, and the Amparo Museum, among many others. The Biblioteca Palafoxiana (Palafoxiana Library) - located in the historic administration building of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla - is a library-museum designated by Presidential Decree as a national historic monument due to its extensive collection. It houses 43,000 volumes in languages such as Hebrew, Latin, Sanskrit, Chaldean and Greek.

A beautiful place to relax, drink coffee, have dinner and enjoy live music and entertainment while surrounded by stunning colonial buildings and churches, Zócalo square is worth a visit. This rustic plaza is located in the center of the historic district. Nearby, the Alley of the Frogs is known for its popular antique shopping area by day and its lively musical atmosphere at night.

Since the mid-90’s a major urban development project has been implemented called "Angelópolis" which has included the development of a river walk, the appropriation and reconditioning of many spaces throughout the city and the influx of major international companies. This project has contributed a great deal to the changing face of the city where the modern coexists and sometimes clashes with the historic.

Puebla is famous for its beautifully glazed Talavera pottery which has its origins in Mediterranean Europe, but through the years acquired its own particular regional flavor. Now regulated by the government of Mexico, the production of officially designated Talavera takes place in only a few workshops in the city of Puebla, where strict adherence to complex fabrication processes and usage of traditional materials continue to this day.

Puebla is also renowned for some of the best food in the country. “Mole”, a sauce most often served with chicken which contains chocolate, cinnamon, nuts, various peppers and between 16 and 90 additional ingredients (depending on who makes it) is perhaps the most famous traditional dish of Puebla. There are too many dishes to name which contribute to city’s culinary fame but some other well-known ones are: chalupas (deep-fried corn tortillas containing many ingredients such as: chicken, beef or pork, beans, sour cream and sauces); chiles en nogada (chile peppers stuffed with spiced ground beef mixed with fruit and topped off with a walnut based cream sauce and pomegranate seeds); and camote (a specially prepared sweet potato, butter, honey and cinnamon dish).

The ultra-modern Centro Cultural of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla is where the CONAHEC conference will be held. It is among the largest and best equipped meeting spaces in the country and at the same time serves as one of the foremost community spaces for the preservation of the art, and culture of the region. It is emblematic of the deep commitment of the university to the history and future of the city.

EDUCATION:

Puebla is among the highest ranked city in terms of the concentration of higher education institutions (second only to Mexico City). The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) is the oldest and largest university in the city, founded in 1587 as Colegio del Espíritu Santo. Other local members of CONAHEC who are contributing as co-hosts for this conference include the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla, the Universidad de las Américas Puebla, the Universidad Tecnológica de Puebla and the Instituto de Estudios Universitarios. Many additional CONAHEC member higher education institutions have campuses in Puebla also, including the Universidad Iberoamericana and the Tec de Monterrey.

ENTERTAINMENT:

Year round there are a wide variety of cultural and artistic events such as dance and theatrical performances, live music, conferences, and more.

For those who love sports, soccer is the most popular spectator sport in Mexico and Puebla’s Estadio Cuauhtémoc (Cuauhtémoc Stadium) is home to Puebla F.C., the city’s first division team and the Lobos BUAP (BUAP Wolves).
